La distopia post-apocalittica si fonde con l\u2019esplorazione spaziale. <em>The midnight sky<\/em> racconta di un futuro in cui la terra viene sconvolta da un cataclisma ambientale mentre \u00e8 nelle sue prime fasi il programma di colonizzazione di K-23, satellite di Giove.<\/p>\n<p>Un soggetto tipico della fantascienza che, a dispetto della sua scarsa originalit\u00e0, permette a Clooney di focalizzare la macchina da presa sul dramma che si consuma nella vita dei protagonisti. Cos\u00ec la narrazione si alterna tra, il solitario tentativo, da parte dell\u2019ultimo uomo rimasto sulla superficie del pianeta, di avvisare gli occupanti della nave spaziale Aether di quanto accaduto alla Terra e le difficolt\u00e0 che gli astronauti incontrano nel rientro dalla missione esplorativa su K-23. Le due storie procedono parallele in un montaggio alternato che affianca il baratro di rimpianti e solitudine in cui a stento sopravvive Augustine, alla speranza, all\u2019attesa del ricongiungimento e di ritorno alla vita che i cosmonauti della Aether portano con s\u00e9 nel rientro a casa.<\/p>\n<p>La tensione drammatica che attraversa queste due storie non raggiunge mai il suo climax, allentandosi terribilmente con l\u2019incedere del racconto. La sceneggiatura tergiversa troppo su momenti transitori, togliendo spazio alla caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Di poco aiuto sono i flashback il cui intento di indagare la psicologia del protagonista risulta superficiale e lasciano quesiti senza risposta.
